Johnny Steele, a vivacious and hilarious stand-up comedian from the San Francisco Bay Area, infuses his performances with a distinctive blend of personal history and cultural humor. Drawing from his rich Spanish and Italian heritage, Steele humorously recounts his ancestors' journey from Spain to Hawaii and eventually to Contra Costa County, intertwining these tales with his own experiences growing up in Pittsburgh, California. His comedic perspective often includes playful jabs at his hometown, highlighting the formidable football culture and the city's notoriously low SAT scores. Through his energetic storytelling and witty commentary, Steele uses stand-up comedy as a means to entertain and connect with his audience, all while raising awareness about important issues like football-induced concussions.

Announcer:

Stand up comedy. Your host in MC presents comedy Appeteasers, a podcast where you will find short comedy sets, stories, and funny bits from the famous and not so famous. Here is your host and MC, Scott Edwards.

R. Scott Edwards:

Hi, and welcome to this week's episode of Comedy Appetizers. I have some straight stand up comedy recorded recently in a live show, so the audio's a little bit off, but the very funny Johnny Steele out of the San Francisco Bay Area shares a little bit of his stand up comedy for a fundraiser for a good friend of ours, will durst. So sit back and enjoy some stand up comedy by Johnny Steele.

Johnny Steele:

So my name is Steele, but it's not a real name. That's a college nickname because I came from a town, but, you know, anyway, but my family came from Spain. I don't know. I'm spanish and italian, and I learned this not long ago. My ancestors from Spain, I couldn't find them in Ellis island. And that's because you probably know this if you're an older person. They didn't go through Elizabeth. They went down around South America and they went, guess where? Hawaii. Have you heard of this? And they go to Hawaii, and for like ten months, they got picked fruit and vegetables to feed their passage. I'm two generations away from indentured surface. That were my spanish ancestors, and we settled in Contra Costa county, east coast. So my ancestors, just to show you what they were like, they were in Hawaii 120 years ago. Can you imagine how beautiful and unspoiled it was? They were there. They walked. Yeah, there you go. This little. They were there. All right. Oh, yeah, brother. They was over there a long time ago. And you know what happened? They looked around one day and they saw, you know, year round temperate climate and beautiful water to swim in and fruit dropping out of the trees on their plates and half naked brown women on the surf. You know, they said to each other, hey, fuck this. Let's move to Antioch. Those are my people. Yeah. So we actually grew up in nearby Pittsburgh, California, named after the other Pittsburgh on purpose, for some reason. They must have, I think, 100 something years ago. They must have had a name. We got a new town here. We want to give it a new name. What are you looking for in a name? We want a name that embodies, I don't know, misery, alcoholism, violence, spousal abuse in the crumbling industrial mill days. Pittsburgh. Say that. Pittsburgh. We are known for two things. My hometown, we have the almost parentally, we have the toughest football team, if you know, Pittsburgh, toughest football team. And the lowest SAT scores. Thank you very much. We can easily beat you 48 to nothing. We just couldn't tell you what that added up to. Doesn't build up to anything. Zero doesn't count. Shoot up and try to figure it out. I had a lot of concussions when they thought that was a good idea. I played all the way through college, and high school was really bad. Concussions like you did knock down, and you'd be on the field. Everybody do this, and they come up and they snap that thing in your nose with some kind of ammonia stick, and they drag you to the sidelines and, you know, you're lucky like this. And they put you on the bench and they go, who's president? And you said something like, lincoln, close enough. Get your ass back in there. Play a few more. Yeah, I'm a little worried because now we know about CTE and brain damage and all that. And my high school. You tackled head first. Who played when you tackled head first? They're ruining the game now. You went helmet to helmet. The guy with the most paint or plastic on the front of his helmet after the game was the stud of the week. That was a contest. You put your helmet in front of the coach's office if you thought you might have a chance, and he looked over the helmets, and the guy who had the most head to head collisions was the winner. You got two things. The competitive Sdhe stud of the week, sticker number over the back of your helmet. You got that. And then you got someone to walk around your campus with you all next week to help you remember your locker combination, because brain damage, for God's sake. 13 left. Yeah, I'm a little worried about the concussions. They say short term memory loss, other stuff is a sign of CTD. I think I'm doing. I exercise, play a little. Not like these guys. I can't play the music like they do, but do hit the bag. A few thousand clutches a week bicycle. I'm not gonna have brain damage. I'm not. I know. What else? I tell you what. I don't know if I mentioned it or not. I grew up in Pittsburgh, and I played a lot of football when I was. Happened to be at the Suropimist club this evening. And machic is a beautiful town.

R. Scott Edwards:

Well, I know the audio wasn't amazing, but that was Johnny Steele live on stage as he was doing a little comedy set, uh, for a fundraiser for a friend of ours, will durst. And I just saw this show the other day, and he's such a great stand up comic. Always a little vivacious and crazy, but very funny. So that was Johnny Steele. Hey, thanks for joining us on the podcast comedy appetizers, our short form stand up format. If you get a chance, come back next week, we'll have another short bit of stand up comedy for you. Hey, thanks for listening. Bye.
